The Hyperion Mustang P-51D "25" is the first in a series of models which define a new class. Hyperion saw a need for larger models with wingspan of about 1.2 meters (47" ~52") which are designed from the ground up with electric flight in mind, and which sacrifice nothing in scale detail, accessories, and quality of finish.

This size of model is easiest to classify as "engine 25 size", simply because no clear rating system exists for larger electric models. In fact, we realized after flying the Mustang that it's light - but that it is also rugged. So we added two mounts to the kits. One is for Brushless Outrunners like the recommended Z3025-08 (or AXI 2826 series), and the other fits 0.25 ci glow engines, in case that's your preference...

What we love best about this Mustang is the combination of sweet manners (often not the case with Mustangs!) and wide speed envelope. With the Z3025-08 and a 10x7 prop she has good speed and plenty of thrust for large loops, but barely uses 340W maximum power. You could use a battery as small as HP-LVX2100-3S with this setup. But we recommend the HP-LVX2500-3S or HP-LVX3300-3S instead, for longer duration when you use the APC "E" 10x10 prop. With this setup the P-51 still slows down nicely when requested, but is also capable of blazing-fast low passes and absolutely HUGE loops.

THIS KIT INCLUDES ALUMINUM RETRACTS!

Hyperion Glass/Scale P-51D Mustang "25"

The pictures below are of prototypes.  Production versions have scale-shaped all-aluminum spinners as at bottom left in the photo below, and plastic parts such as wheel hubs and control horns have been changed to a more pleasing and scale-like grey color, rather than creme...

See bottom of page for tips on insuring a vibration-free power system.

The kits contain English manuals with many drawings for easy assembly in just a few evenings, or one evening if you're speedy...

Recommended Parts Not Included
POWER SET
Z3025-08 MOTOR
TITAN 50A BEC ESC
M8 x 5mm Adap
3.5mm Gold Conn

You can use the BEC controller with 3S pack and the 5 servos required by the model (Retract and rudder servos are fairly inactive), but we do prefer OPTO for those who don't mind using a separate 4.8V receiver pack.  If you want the OPTO ESC, simply indicate that in the "Comments" box at check-out time.

Servos

W-150MG x 2

Receiver

GWS RD8SL
Castle/Berg 7 Channel

Extensions

WR-003 (10cm) x 2
 WR-004 (20cm) x 2
 WR-006 (60cm) x 2

Battery

HP-LVX2500-3S
Lightest Setup

HP-LVX3300-3S
(recommended)
Light enough, max power, long flights
Propeller

Use APC "E" 10x7 for first flights.  This provides ample speed and plenty of thrust for large, round loops from level flight.  You may then use APC "E" 10x10 if you want eye-popping speed and huge loops, but we do recommend the 3300mAh (or even 3700mAh) battery in that case, to insure that the battery is not over-stressed and to provide long flight times.

Transmitter

4 channel minimum, 6ch+ preferred

Tuning for Smooth Power

Powerful motor sets, and particularly "outrunner" motors which have a large rotating mass at high rpm, need to be carefully tuned to insure that vibration does not occur.  When assembling your Mustang, do the following:

(1) Apply Thin Double-Sided Tape across the entire surface of motor mount base where it meets the firewall (or use a THIN film of silicone sealant).  This helps damp small amplitude vibrations which are normal even with a balanced system.

(2) Tighten screws for Mount/Firewall very well, and use thread locking compound (loctite).

(3) Use all four screws to mount the motor to the motor mount. Tighten well, use loctite.

(4) Carefully balance the propeller

(5) Balance spinner
(see below for tips). Be sure to mark the spinner cone and base (backplate) to keep their relative positions in future.

(6) Tighten the 3mm screw which holds spinner cone to base well, and use loctite.

Part number HP-SPDD-01-BBB
is a set of two ball bearings which are helpful in checking the balance of the SPDD-01 spinners. Rest these inside the spinner cone hole and backplate bushing, with a 3mm rod of any stiff material running down the center. Rest the rod between two level wood blocks, to allow the spinner assembly to freely turn for balancing.

front bearing ID: 3mm , OD: 6mm
backplate bearing ID: 3mm , OD: 8mm

In many cases the spinner will already be sufficiently balanced. In other cases, both the spinner cone and backplate may have small imbalances, which can be corrected by rotating the heavy side of the cone over the light side of the back plate.

In the event that significant imbalance is found, first remove with sandpaper any overspray of paint from inside cone and both sides of backplate, and re-check balance. If required, then balance the backplate alone. Once the backplate is balanced, fit the spinner cone and rotate it to several positions relative the backplate until best balance point is found. For any remaining imbalance, use a strip of vinyl tape inside the spinner cone at light side.
